Every year, on the 20th of June, we celebrate World Refugee Day. The World Refugee Day was established for the first time in accordance with the decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations on 4/12/2000 and was celebrated for the first time on the 20th of June, 2001 on the occasion of 50 years of the establishment of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.
This day is devoted to sensitise the public in regard to refugees around the world and the difficulties they face.
Like every year, on this day, organizations which are devoted to refugees, organize events to celebrate World Refugee Day and the refugee communities in Cyprus.
For the 5th year in a row, Cyprus Refugee Council is organising the World Refugee Day Street Festival in Faneromeni Square from 18:00-22:00. This year the event is co-organised by Cyprus Aware, and under the auspices of the Municipality of Nicosia
Join us and give a message of support and solidarity to refugees, with music, dance and food from all over the world!
Our event is supported by the German Embassy in Cyprus, the Australian Embassy in Cyprus, Vassos Eliades Ltd., and Harziotis Trading. The event has been co-funded by the the European Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and the Republic of Cyprus.
